Pain in One Place Often Starts Somewhere Else
The Fascinating Web of the Body
When people come into unWINd Clinic in Herefordshire, they often point to one painful area — a stiff neck, a sore knee, or an aching lower back. The natural assumption is that the pain lives where it hurts. But the truth is, the human body doesn’t work that way. Pain is often just the messenger. The real cause can be hiding somewhere completely different.
In this blog, we’ll explore how the body’s connective tissue — fascia — links everything together, why pain patterns often surprise people, and how a holistic approach can help you move better, recover faster, and finally break the cycle of recurring pain.
Understanding Fascia — The Body’s Hidden Web
Fascia is a thin layer of connective tissue that wraps around every muscle, joint, and organ in the body. It acts like an internal web or bodysuit, holding everything together while allowing movement. We are particularly interested in the myofascia – myo (muscle) fascia (connective tissue).
When fascia is healthy, it’s supple and flexible. But stress, injury, poor posture, or even emotional tension can cause fascia to tighten. This restriction doesn’t stay local — it pulls on other areas, creating tension and discomfort far away from the source.
Think of a bedsheet: if you tug one corner, the ripple travels across the fabric. The same happens in your body.
Common Pain Patterns I See in the Clinic
At unWINd, I regularly meet clients whose pain is being driven by another part of the body entirely. Some examples:
- Neck and shoulder pain often linked to jaw tension, teeth grinding, or long hours at a computer.
- Lower back pain commonly connected to tight hips, glutes, or hamstrings.
- Knee pain that actually stems from foot imbalances, calf tension, or driving posture.
- Headaches that originate from shoulder tightness or TMJ (jaw) issues.
When treatments only focus on the sore spot, results are often temporary. That’s why looking at the whole body — not just the site of pain — makes such a difference.
This is why, during the consultation process, we go over a variety of daily habits, to work out what is potentially causing the issue(s).
Why Quick Fixes Don’t Last
It’s tempting to reach for painkillers, a heat pack, or even a quick massage on the sore muscle. And while these can help in the short term, they don’t address why the pain keeps coming back.
Lasting relief means asking bigger questions:
- What posture habits are contributing to the pain?
- Which muscles or joints are overworking to compensate for weaker areas?
- How is stress or emotional tension showing up in the body?
The Fix in 6 Approach
That’s where my Fix in 6 programme comes in. Over six tailored sessions, I combine:
- Myofascial release to free restrictions in the fascia web.
- Clinical and sports massage techniques to ease tension and restore mobility.
- Reflexology and holistic bodywork to rebalance the nervous system.
- Pilates and movement guidance to build strength, stability, and prevent flare-ups.
The first 3 sessions are close together (i.e. weekly) then we re-assess to see how your body is responding. Every BODY is unique.
This whole-body approach gets to the root cause of pain, not just the symptoms — helping you move freely, reduce stress, and feel energised again.
Listening to What Pain Is Telling You
Pain isn’t the enemy. It’s the body’s way of saying something needs attention. By exploring the connections within the body and treating the cause rather than the symptom, you can enjoy:
- Less reliance on painkillers.
- Improved posture and mobility.
- More energy for work, family, and the things you love.
- Confidence that you’re not just managing pain — you’re actively healing.
- And aging does not mean you have to put up with being in pain, or expect to do less.
